Scania R730 (DC16 21) engine and SCR emission system operation

Scania’s DC16 21 engine develops 730hp and 3500Nm of torque. It is equipped with an EMS S8 computer which manages its operation and also controls the variable geometry turbo fitted to this R730. The GRSO925R gearbox allows the high torque to be absorbed. The exhaust after-treatment system used on Scania EEV versions is based on the SCR model only. Finally, there is no particulate filter or EGR valve. In the event of an SCR fault, an engine alert appears with the NOx Control Reduction option which reduces engine performance in the event of a problem with the control of nitrogen oxides.

Power optimization for troubleshooting. (Together to sometimes 90T)

Chiptuning is a technique used to optimize the performance of an engine by modifying the engine management parameters (EMS) via reprogramming software. It allows parameters such as the amount of air and fuel injected, boost pressure, valve opening times, etc. to be changed.

In our case, for the Scania R730 power optimization, we modified the injection parameters to increase the power from 730hp to 800hp and the torque from 3500Nm to nearly 4000Nm. In addition, this optimization has improved the performance of the truck for recovery needs during heavy loads.

Elimination of NOx problem R730

To eliminate NOx-related faults via the EMS (Engine Management System) and the EEC3 (Engine Emission Control), it is necessary to reprogram the engine management software. This reprogramming can be carried out using Scania reprogramming software as well as tools for managing the different maps. By directly accessing the parameters of the EMS via a diagnostic tool, we therefore have access to all the settings as the engineers in Sweden could do.

It should be noted that when NOx control is removed via the EMS and the EEC3, fault feedback on the CANBus (Controller Area Network Bus) system is no longer possible. This means that all problems with the adblue system disappear, they will no longer be reported via the on-board diagnostic system.

Why did you remove the NOx control?

This truck, soon to be equipped with a free exhaust to carry out gatherings between enthusiasts on closed and private ground, could not be used without driving in a free exhaust with the adblue activated. Therefore, not disabling the adblue would show warning lights and reduced engine performance. Deactivation to use the vehicle freely can be done with a simple switch.
